Therefore that the LORD your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands. Deuteronomy 7:9
My Story:
My name is Mario; I'm a 23 years old guy from Guatemala.
Since last summer I have been living in Denmark where I have a traineeship as engineer.
I was born in October 1982 in Guatemala City. I have a very nice backgroud with loving and caring parents Paty and Roberto, two sisters, Anaisa and Christa who are more than sisters to me, uncles, aunts, cousins, friends and roll model grandparents.
For many of you who know me, you might think that I've had a very easygoing life...
I finished high school in the top 10 of my class; I finished Engineering when I was 22 years old.
Every time I had a goal or a dream it came true...
One of my passions is to travel and I have been blessed to travel around the world.
I have backpacked Europe several times, South America once and traveled to USA, Mexico and Canada. When I was 18 years old, just after High school, I went to Germany for a couple of months to learn the language. It was a life changing experience for me.
It was the first time I was living abroad for a long time.
After I was done with my German studies, I backpacked Europe for a month.
Right now I'm abroad in Denmark having a traineeship for 1 year...
At my dorm I have met very cool people that will be friends for ever: Thomas, Till, Vlad to name a few and also my new friends that I won't name becauseI might get in trouble for forgetting someone :). You're all great!!!
These friends have really made my stay in Denmark much more milder, fun and worth.
God's hand on me has been working since I was a baby or before I was born.
I couldn't have asked for a better family. I really thank God for the parents He chose for me... For the wisdom He gave them and for all what they are.
For me my Grand Parents, Mario and Doris Fuentes, were a model to follow.
I was really close to them, they gave me advice and taught me about Jesus and He's love...
My parents are Christians and so am I. I was raised on a Christian family, I was taught about Jesus tender love for me.
I learned that He is a righteous God, that he is fair and that He'll make justice but also I learned that He is a loving God.
For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16) .
I am part of that world so I could take this verse as mine:
For God so loved MARIO, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish, but have eternal life. (John 3:16) .
The gift of God's son as a provision for sin was given to all humans, regardless of who we are. God's love is unconditional.
All of these things, which are "good" things, will pass away. Only love is eternal, since love will be the basis of eternal life.
Jesus greatest commandment "YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND." (Matthew 22:37)
The second most important commandment is "YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF."
Until now, everything sounds perfect...
It hasn't been like that all the time but with Jesus at my side all the pain and suffer has been much milder.
As I said before, I was really close to my Grand Parents, Papito and Mamita.
They were the leaders of a Catholic Christian Community in Guatemala:
"Comunidad Católica San Pablo"
They were very healthy and they were a happy couple.
In October 2002, the day of my birthday, Papito was diagnosed with cancer and Mamita was diagnosed a few weeks before with a problem; which needed surgery.
Back in the year 2000, Roberto (Beto) my grandfather from my dad's side was diagnosed with cancer. He died when I was abroad in Germany. He was a great man, full of life and friends. He was very friendly and everyone loved him and laughed whenever he was around.
This was very tough for me because when I left Guatemala to go to Germany, I knew I was not going to see him again.
When Papito was diagnosed with cancer, it was the second time we had to go through this. Papito and Mamita went to surgery more or less at the same time. We were all praying for their recovery and asking God for a miracle. They were 77 and 70.
The days passed by and Mamita's surgery was a success and Papito was getting better although the cancer was still there.
Mamita was fully awake, she was recovering fast and she started speaking. She had a great sense of humour and she was making jokes all the time.
I read the bible with her and discussed some verses.
We talked a lot and I could feel she was really proud of me. I was her first grandson. I can still remember her smile...
One day out of the blue, when Mamita was still at the hospital, she had a stroke and she stayed in a coma.
At that moment we were asking God why? Why a loving God will do this to those he loves?
Papito started getting weaker and weaker but with a strong faith. He knew he was going to die.
We brought Papito and Mamita back to their house and we hired a Doctor and some nurses to take care of them.
Papito was able to walk a bit and a couple of times he came to the living room to talk to us. One of the last things he did before he died was praying for each and every one of us. He blessed us!
He was sure where he was going, he knew he was going to heaven and that God was waiting for him. He was really peaceful and full of joy.
A few hours before he died we praised the Lord and we sang some Christian worship songs. I played the guitar and we were singing with my mom, aunts and sisters in his room.
Papito died the 20th of December 2002. So it was Christmas 2002, Papito was dead and Mamita was in a coma. We started saying, why Christmas, I am not in the mood to celebrate Christmas...
Then was when we learned that Jesus was the reason of Christmas...
Jesus came to the Earth to save us and He is the reason of this season.
Christmas went by, and Mamita was still in a coma!
Mamita died the 27th of February 2003. Two months difference with Papito.
My life changed for ever, this made me stronger and I got closer to Jesus.
'I lift my eyes up to the hills-where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord the Maker of Heaven and Earth' He will not let your foot slip-he who watches over you will not slumber.
Indeed, he who watches over Israel will neither slumber nor sleep .
Psalm 121: 1-2.
The years went by; I finished University and graduated as Industrial Engineer April 2005.
I got a traineeship with AIESEC. I applied to several countries and finally I was accepted to work at Damixa in Denmark. I got a traineeship for a year... I started 2nd of June 2005.
IT WAS MY FIRST JOB AS ENGINEER. I was so excited!!!
The months passed and suddenly early in the morning last November I got a call from my mom!
It was 4am...
I KNEW IT WAS A BAD NEWS!
Of course it was...
My mom said:
"Mario, today I am calling you with sad news..."
Johnny your cousin is dead!!!
I was like, what? What happen?
My mom was very calmed and told me she just got the news from my aunt, Johnny's mom, who lives in the States.
My cousin, a talented 17 years old guy, honor roll Senior and great musician killed himself. He jumped from the Golden Gate Bridge in California.
There are a lot of doubts and questions.... what happened? He had a lot of friends, he never said anything... He was successfull!
This was a major shock for me and for my family...
I was really sad! We started asking again why? Why to us? What happened Jesus?
Once again we had to go through a lot of pain.
But Jesus was there for us all the time.
Peace came back to my family. Of course we are still sad and miss John but as this verse says "With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God."
Mark 10:17-27.
God brought peace to me and to my family once again...
All the glory be to God.
Amen.
